The History of Piney Grove
The History of the Church's Name
The history of Piney Grove Baptist Church goes back a long way. Based on some of the records the church
still has in possession, it dates back to 1880! Back then, it wasn’t called Piney Grove Baptist Church. It
was actually called The Church at Pine Grove. This wasn’t the only time the name changed. Our records
indicate the church name was changed to Unity Church in 1885, then changed to Pine Grove Church in
1915.
The History on Public Records
Dade County Superior Court has records dating back to 1885, indicating that The Church at Pine Grove
owned the property on which it was meeting. The church was also known to be a member of the Coosa
Baptist Association.
The Renewal of Piney Grove
Renewal isn't about History
Church isn’t the name, the property, or the building. Church is the people. It doesn’t matter how far back
the history of a church extends. What matters is what the church is known for today.
Renewal is about the Present
It’s great to read about the founding and history of a church. It helps us think back on what God must have been doing all through the years in the lives of people. But the church of today can’t just live off of the stories of those in the past. The people, that make up the church today, need God to write their own stories.
Renewal is really about the Future
Isaiah is one of the most well-known prophets in the Old Testament. God told Isaiah to tell Israel that He was going to deliver them out of Babylonian captivity just like He delivered them out of Egypt. They were going to have their own story of renewal!
Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now
it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
Isaiah 43:18-19
God is always ahead of us. He is working, leading, empowering, multiplying, and growing His church. Sometimes His works can’t be seen, but there are times when they can be seen.
The process of renewal begins in the heart. When God begins to renew faith, hope, and love, nothing in
the lives of people will be unaffected. The result of His work within our hearts affects our relationships,
our dreams and desires, and ultimately our destiny.
Renewal doesn't just take place within us, it can also be seen in what is taking place around us. What was old is now being made new. Colors begin to change. The brightness returns to spaces that were once dim. Broken things are rebuilt. Unused spaces are restored back to life. Renewal shifts our focus forward as we anticipate what God is doing next.
If the idea of renewal sounds exciting, we want to invite you to Piney Grove Baptist Church. The entire
church family is leaning forward in anticipation of what God is going to do next.
